Peranakan Tale: Forbidden Love Across the Straits

Step into a world where heritage, memory, and love intertwine. Peranakan Tale: Forbidden Love Across the Straits is more than a novel — it is a journey across cultures and generations. Inspired by my walk along Blair Road and recollections of my ancestral home in Taiping, this story brings to life the textures of Peranakan heritage, the struggles of identity, and the courage of forbidden love.

The story of

K B Lim

K B Lim has always felt a quiet pull towards word — a gentle urge to step beyond his familiar world of dermatology — a journey from diagnosing skin disorders and research to uncovering the deeper textures of heritage and memory.

Through memory and his textures of earlier life, and through recollections of stories handed down by his elders, Dr Lim found a new calling — to write, to preserve, and to give voice to a legacy.

My Inspiration - The Blair Road Walk & NUS Baba House

The Walk Begins (HomePage)

The Blair Road walk, through the conserved shophouses of Singapore’s Blair Plain and onward to NUS Baba House at Neil Road, became the spark that shaped this book.

As I traced patterned wall tiles and ornate pintu pagars, vivid memories of my childhood in Taiping, Perak returned. This walk was more than a passage through streets — it was a dialogue between past and present, both inspiration and affirmation. It connects the Peranakan textures of Singapore with the enduring spirit of Taiping, grounding this book in memory, continuity, and the belief that heritage lives on through us.

Main Hall and 5 Foot Way, Ancestral Home

My Ancestral Home, Main Road (Jalan Taming Sari), Taiping

Left Image (L to R): My sister, Looi and brother, Jin in the Main hall, its patterned floor tiles and black-wood furniture framing the two siblings in a moment of everyday intimacy (1949).

Right Image: Brother, Jin in the five foot way, the corridor that links home to street, lined with patterned floor tiles and the dado beneath the window lined with floral tiles — a quiet façade of Peranakan domestic life.

The Blair Road Walk circles home

The Blair Road walk turns inward to my ancestral home in Taiping — its patterned floor tiles and black‑wood furniture, its five‑foot way lined with floral dado tiles — framing my sister, Looi and brother, Jin in moments of everyday intimacy. These images remind us that heritage is lived through companionship as much as craft. Together, they echo the façades and interiors of Blair Road, weaving the conserved streets of Singapore back into the domestic textures of Taiping. The walk thus circles home: from shophouse to museum, from memory to continuity, heritage endures in both place and family.

My Inspiration - My Ancestors, Historical Figures, and Buildings

My Grandparents
Grandfather-Lim Pean Lye; Grandmother-Cheah Chit Jong

Photographs of my ancestors anchor the Blair Road walk in lived heritage, turning memory into something tangible. More than metaphor, the walk connects lineage and space, inviting readers to glimpse the roots that shaped my story.

Ancestral portraits, paired with captions of resilience and philanthropy, remind us that family memory underpins this journey. Archival notes on figures such as my grandfather Lim Pean Lye, who led the Firewood & Charcoal Producers’ Association, lend depth and authority to the heritage theme.

Images of the ancestral home in Taiping and Blair Road’s conserved shophouses — with their patterned tiles, verandas, and pintu pagars — visually echo the motifs of continuity and reinforce the walk as inspiration…
